Formed in the spring of 2005, The Drug Policy Forum of Kansas (DPFKS) promotes public education on alternative drug control polices to create a much needed change in the Sunflower State. Drug policy reform intersects with many issues vital to a safe and healthy Kansas, including criminal justice, economics, public health, racial justice, women's rights, and students' rights, just to name a few. We are bringing together professionals in these disciplines to debate the alternatives to criminal justice penalties for illegal drug use.

The Drug Policy Forum of Kansas is a proud to announce we have received the following grants from the Drug Policy Alliance $5000 in the spring of 2006 to conduct our state-wide poll, and $10,000 in the winter of 2006 to further our educational and research mission.

Our Vision

The Drug Policy Forum of Kansas envision a state-wide drug control strategy which preserves the social, economic, legal, public health, and civil rights afforded to all Kansans under the constitution.

Our Mission

The Drug Policy Forum of Kansas promotes debate on innovative policies and approaches to reduce the harms of both drug use and drug prohibition, and public education and support for effective public heath alternatives to the costly war-on-drugs.

Our Current Strategies

Sponsor public forums where leading subject matter experts in medicine, law, social sciences, law enforcement and economics may debate and educate the public about current drug war strategies and effective alternatives.

Alert members and supporters to important opportunities to support positive changes in local, state or national drug control policy.

Research the cost to taxpayers of the war on drugs in Kansas and provide analysis of the projected savings alternative policies would generate.

Survey the public and elected officials on important drug policy issues, such as medical marijuana, drug treatment vs. incarceration.

Educate the public about harm reduction policies such as medical marijuana defense legislation, and drug courts.

Our Other Activities

In addition to the strategies we are working on, DPFKS also is involved in:

Coordinating public events to debate drug policy issues to build consensus for alternative policies

Addressing civic groups and special functions on alternative drug control strategies.

Assisting the media by providing accurate information on drug policy, laws, and statistics

Researching criminal statistics and drug use data information to legislators at local, state, and federal levels.

Maintaining a library of tapes and books dealing with drug issues.

      Holding public meetings.

Maintaining an Internet site for rapid distribution of information.

Communicating with drug reform organizations around the World.

Sponsoring public lectures and debates on drug policy matters.
